Federal correctional officers work under the judicial branch of the government, maintaining a close relationship to courts, while at state and local level, probation is a function of executive branch. Federal corrections officers not only take on-the-job training like their counterparts in state and local levels in their districts but also get national training. This training in core responsibilities and fire-arms is provided to officers at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Charleston, South Carolina. These officers at all levels handle ‘specialized caseloads’ of a particular section of criminals like substance abusers, the mentally ill and the gang members, offering challenging duties to these officers. Although it is not compulsory to carry fire-arms, but officers dealing with violent offenders are, generally, allowed to carry firearms. They are community partners, providing services, which include substance abuse and mental health treatment, medical care , education and training, and employment assistance (U.S.Courts). According to the Congress of the United States Paper (2005), corrections officer are 18% of the total task force of federal law enforcement officers, using the data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics. According to the census’s categorization of law enforcement jobs, the duties of corrections officers would include court operations including security and protection. As per Congress Budget Office (CBO) analysis, federal officers earn more than state and county level officers’, which is because of differences in job responsibilities, accounting to a certain extent for such pay differentials.
